wite1, wyte or wight
vt (or Scot) to blame; to lay the blame on.

Many thanks pesky; I think you are correct. Problem is, there is no cross check for the second letter. Wyte seems a valid alternative (according to Shorter OED) for both meanings to wite. Would have thought the setter would have spotted this?
