I tried to explain this yesterday as follows:
'both ways' = mutual
(for some reason you then have to lose the L)
'cut up' = anagram of what's left = autum
mass = ton
autum in to...n = To Autumn (poem by keats)

The bit I dont understand myself is why effective means to lose the last letter?

Hi gen2 - I think the logic must be:

'effective both ways' = MUTUAL

'cut' = MUTUA

'up' = AUTUM

. . . . then as you say, inside 'TO N'

Cheers, ja

gen2. I think it should be read as Both ways =Mutual. Cut up= shortened- Mutua, and ton for mass.

Best I can get.

Aye, that sounds a lot better johnalex.

I think this is an agreement.

It didn't exactly jump out at you, eh?

Thank you for this. I've found this Jumbo a very different experience, but on the whole I've enjoyed doing it, and in spite of the clues being much more convoluted than usual, on the whole I've been able to account for every letter, which makes a change! And they also read nice and smoothly which is quite an achievement.
