Score is a verb: to make cuts or scratches in the surface of something; to mark (a line) by a shallow cut. [Source: Chambers online]

It is also a noun: a written or printed copy of music for several parts, set out vertically down the page; the music from a film or play. [Same source]

Does this help?

Double meaning kettledrum - 'Score' is to cut (eg run a knife down a parcel), then 'Score' to write music for a film.

Thank you both; I understood about music and cutting: it was the film bit that eluded me. Does a score necessarily relate to film music?
No all written music has a score but I suppose 'film score' is a common phrase....
Look at the second part of the Chambers definition: it explicitly says (it's the 9th definition of the noun, I only included the relevant bits) music from a film or play.
