I think you're right Dinky but on reading the clue again I think they are looking for the full "pink carnation". "car" is there. Your "pink" is right. A partial combustion of detonation leaves you with "nation". The 'mixture' then gives you "pink carnation".

I think the answer given by Dustybun is wonderfully contrived - but is seeing too much in the clue. The question describes perfectly the process known as "pinking".

I personally would go with the simpler answer of Dinkypuzzled, except I would add an "S" (to get PINKS). This would get verbal agreement with the word "emits" in the question. However, I would also be influenced by the style of the other clues.

Nevertheless, full marks to Dustybun for mental agility - especially at quartetr to two in the morning! ?
