Think I've solved the clues, but would be interested in fellow competitors' views on the village with the canal junction?

I reckon it's Braunston. What did you get for the second question? ADE.,

Thanks, Ade. I had Braunston, too. Am sure the second answer is Foxton. The route described was Braunston - Watford - Stanford - Foxton. The last reference was to Bragg who was educated at Market Harborough.
Second answer is def Foxton - if you Google "Foxton" and "inclined boat lift" it will take you to the site of the trust who are trying to restore the workings
