Any ideas on this one:

No man can live without my first,
by night and day 'tis used.
My second is by all accursed
by night and day abused.
My whole is never seen by day
and never heard by night.
'Tis dear to friends when far away,
but hateful when in sight.

Everyone at work has been agonising about this... could it be "Life & Death"
Even better answer - "Heartache" - thanks Evan.
This riddle was written by Richard Whately (1987-1863)
Archbishop of Dublin and formerly Professor of Political Economy at Oxford Univ. He occasionally wrote riddles, one of which is the above quoted riddle... The answer is three parts:

My first is equality, my second inferiority; my whole superiority.

oddly enough the rest of the riddle is never posted....

When from the Ark's capacious round
Mankind came forth in pairs,
Who was it that first heard the sound
Of boots upon the stairs?
