What is the dog letter

I have a quiz where a couple of clues refer to the dog letter. Can anyone tell me what the dog letter is or means.

A dog letter, as far as I am aware, is a letter which is so general in meaning, it could be about a person's dog.

I thought dog letter is an americanism for a letter of recommendation re a job ........... ie it is a 'faithful' reference

Hi chelle017...Not the Matlock by any chance is it...I was debating whether to ask that one...mind you, I don't think it will help very much. Must admit I've been struggling with this one, still only about 3/4 of the way through. Will trudge on !!!!!!!! xx
