Juliely, "Charlie is my darling" (no. 44), I'm working on "c" for charlie and loves or lover which gives "cloves" and "clover"; neither of which can really be described as a fruit or vegetable, What do you think?
Big Jenny, I think you have cracked it. Really, very good; I'd never have seen that connection as I have not heard of Geldof's daughter.
razza, What's the significence of "pinky"?

Mine's an older edition and it says "rat , any of the larger animals of the genus Mus (distinguished from mouse) " etc.
I agree that the common rat is Rattus rattus, but i was looking for something else to give me some help with the solution.
Strangely, there is no mention of rattus in the definition, which is odd.
I had better get a newer edition.
