Maybe not! If it is the general term (any) then you're looking at an Alkane:-

Alkanes do have the general formula quoted, but the simplest alkanes, such as methane, ethane, propane, butane and pentane, cannot be considered to be "long chain", so the first answer of "paraffin" is correct.
