I have "gilded cage " as one of my phrases. As this is also in the clue I am not sure it is right.
Can someone confirm, please?
Thank you

Although this is unusual, I think it must be correct, as it is the only pairing remaining after linking the other 3 answers.
My Mum used to sing a song which included the words "only a bird in a gilded cage" so I reckon its right.
The way these puzzles are going lately anything is possible !!!

Thank you.
I, too, know the song but as the phrase was also in the clue I was not sure.
As you say, GKFanatic, these puzzles are certainly not up to scratch lately.
Seriously thinking of abandoning Herculis and doing Daily Express big one on Mondays.
Only buy the paper for the crossword anyway!
I've never seen the Express puzzle, is it General Knowledge ???????????? I'm getting excited now !!!!!
Agree this puzzle isn't so great, I enjoy the Sat one, and always get Express only 40p on Monday for the 1,ooo crossword Yes GK Fanatic its general knowledge and due in on Fridays, also the crusader cross so two crosswords in Monday Express.
I remember the song about the gilded cage.
Yes, the Express puzzle is general knowledge. 1000 prize in a 40p paper as opposed to Herculis prize of 250 in a 65p paper. No contest really, especially as Monday papers rarely contaim much news.
New Shorter Oxord English Dictionary (Vol.1) states:
Gilded cage - a luxurious but restrictive environment.
I don't do this puzzle but there is a very famous painting called "The Gilded Cage" . I can't remember the name of the artist but I believe it was a woman, if my memory is correct.
