Julius Dedekind
Oshac
Apologies Onrarioice - I gave you the Austrian artist instead of the german mathematician. Part of the trouble is that in most places he was listed by his first christian name which was Richard!
Question Author
To macpark and Shaneystar2:
Yes I could only find a Richard Dedekind and as Richard didn't fit as Christian name thought I was on to the wrong guy.
Thanks for Oshac. Where did you find that, Shaneystar2? If you found it in the Chambers, I don't have one and will have to phone around and see if one is available in The Last Outpost of the Empire.
Thanks again to both of you.
PS. If I want to mail this to UK does it have to be beautifully presented and written up in ink or is pencil okay?
Actually Richard was his 'third' forename. Julius was correctly his registered first name. As macpark says, most references refer to him as Richard.
Re: oshac. You don't have to have Chambers. I got it from the crossword solver on the Chambers website here:

http://www.chambersharrap.co.uk/chambers/wwiza rds/wwizards.py/main

just put in o?s?c and up it pops!
Dohhh . . .

o?h?c of course.
Question Author
Gen2: I did as you suggested and of course was given the word, BUT no suggestion as to the meaning of it. I still don't know where to find the dictionary definition of Oshac. I have checked all my Canadian ones (3) and my Roget's and can't find any mention of Oshac.
Thanks for answering my request.
Here he is
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dedekind..hard to find ..i had to browse through loads of mathematicians to find him.The Germans always use their middle or third name as the christian name.
Agreed, but once you have the suspected solution, enter the word and a keyword from the definition into google and you get it then.

i.e. oshac ammoniac
Question Author
Thank you Shaneystar2.
I found Dedekind's forenames as Julius Wilhelm Richard. I wish I had known this yesterday when trying so desperately to find this guy. With the info I had I just couldn't fit in the correct forename and that totally blindsided me.
Question Author
Thanks Gen2. I'm certainly getting a good grounding in computer searching from you guys in the UK. Believe me it is very much appreciated.
Question Author
Another thank you to Shaneystar2 for the ABSP website.
hiya Ontario - it is often the 'luck of the draw' when searching ....

For German Mathematician - went Wikepedia Homepage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
and typed in 'Number Theory' ....

this got me to ..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_Theory

Srolled down the Article - and focused on the names given in the section about the 19th century ...

One of the names was 'Dedekind' .... followed the link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dedekind
and came to a biography of 'Richard Dedekind' which listed all his names Julius Wilhelm Richard Dedekind, and the comment -

' As an adult, he never employed the names Julius Wilhelm.

Hope this helps

{Wikepedia is not always entirely 100% accurate) ....
so, when I use Wikepedia, I check out the facts to another source ..... in this case I put the full name Julius Wilhelm Richard Dedekind into Google and came up with many sites that agreed.
You will see the funny side with this one .....

ammoniac plant .... I typed into the 'Search the site ' box ....
and very obligingly ... AB came up with the same Question and the answer Oshac !!!!

Thanks pandabear. I feel like I'm back at college but taking completely new courses. I certainly appreciate all the help that the Abers have given me.
Question Author
Pandabear:
Re your query on ammoniac plant.
We're either running round in ever decreasing circles or there's an echo in the Abers forum.
ontario -- I have no query about ammoniac plant?

I understood you to be asking for information about how persons found the answer? ou may have directed your question to shaneystar2, but any Aber can be helpful?

I found the answer Oshac by using the Search the Site facility which came uo with the same question asked in October 2005 .... and the answer oshac was give there.

to confirm the word Oshac . ....... I Googled ........
Oshac, ammoniac plant and there it was ........... for example http://www.absp.org.uk/words/arabic.html

Hi pandabear.
Yes I realized what you had done. I did it myself after you told me about typing it into the search box and getting the answer for the September generalist.
I did laugh about it and that's why I said (since the question had been asked and answered previously in an early Generalist) "We're either running around in ever decreasing circles or there is an echo on the Abers site."
Does that clear the confusion?
Cheers.
