Not sure, but doesn't MIKE come before November in the alphabet? Kilo, Lima, Mike, November etc?

Don't know how it fits the clue, though, as I never do Mephisto.

Never come across that usage before, QM.

British, goes back to 1815-25 I gather, so a naval phrase perhaps?
