Just started it! Will get back!!!
Is it the clue to 12down? should read an eigth of an ounce?
Is Cheney correct for 51a or is that spelt wrong?
Pauline - having trouble with those two also!!
there certainly seems to be an additional space in grid for 50a unless Cheney has an alternative spelling.

12 down is drachm.
Think compiler has spelt Chenney wrong...what a surprise!!
JRB...12d is drachm
The standard definition of drachm (in 3 dictionaries I checked) is 1/8th ounce.
I have found "Cheney" spelt "Chenney" but that is not the way Dick Cheney spells his name.
I am having the same problem with Cheney but i can't find an alternative spelling

is it worth completing this week as satisfaction will be nil
"Drachm" is an alternative spelling of "dram" which is one sixteenth of an ounce according to my sources of information.
I thought 50 across in today's telegraph was spelt cheyney
In Chambers drachm is 1/16 oz (imperial) though in US is 1/8 oz - most confusing!
Again mistakes in this puzzle hope people will complain Drachm seems to be the answer and is an apothecary measure 60 grains or Eighth of an ounce. Now as for 50a is a puzzle anyone got a line to the oval office to check it out ! good luck
US Embassy website spells it as Cheney.

Have e-mailed the Telegraph and wil let you know the response.
