ipecacuanha
n (sometimes shortened to ipecac) the dried root of various South American plants, used as a purgative, emetic and expectorant; a plant from which this is obtained, chiefly Cephaelis or Uragoga (family Rubiaceae).

This meets the clue - medicinal drug given to induce vomiting especially when a person has taken poison - does it not? If not, why not?
goldenfield:

I think ladybarbarbara was pointing ou the difference in the spelling.

She was clearly accustomed to spelling it ipicac rather than ipecac as the shortened form.

I can't see that she meant anything else.
Question Author
Because, strictly speaking, it's an abbreviation, which is not mentioned in the clue.
Also, the full name is the name on the bottle whenever I have used it in A&E!
Question Author
Sorry, I should have spelt it with an i in the original question, I did in the puzzle itself.
Sorry but cannot agree - ipecac is a shortened version of ipecacuanha according to Chambers - it is not stated as an abbreviation, making the clue perfectly acceptable in accordance with English today. I may be pedantic but why would you spell the word ipIcac when the full name begins ipEcac?
Question Author
Because - as the above answer says - I made a mistake in the original question, I meant 'e' not 'i'.
Ipecacuanha is abbreviated to ipecac
Fair enough, ladybarbara - but can I point out that in the answer you refer to, you say "Sorry, I should have spelt it with an i in the original question, I did in the puzzle itself".

I would not have said anything further had I understood that you did indeed spell it with an 'e' - but no harm done; we all have the answer required anyway.
