There seems to be a problem with this. I thought Battista but I'm wrong. Pauline Ward thinks Baptista but Mariano Baptista's surname was Caserta! Anyone else have anything to say?

What's wrong with Baptista? Doea it fit? I don't do this puzzle, but whatever his real surname was, the President of Bolivia (1892-1896) was known as Mariano Baptista.
Baptista fits with all the other answers and the clue itself - I wouldn't read to much into multi-named South Americans
I don't think they take what we call a surname as their actual surname .If you look in Wikipedia as I did to find it and click on some of the others they use the middle name as a surname .
Pedro Blanco Soto was just known as Pedro Blanco for example.
The reason for this is that in Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries, children take the surname of both the mother and the father, so they have 2 surnames (in fact especially in aristocratic families they keep both surnames of each parent and even grandparent, so a person's full name can go and on!) So what looks like a middle name to us is actually a surname.
