Thanks, billy bonka. I'm not really feeling touchy, but genuinely apologetic. I'd had such a quick look at the previous answers, and ( 1 ) hadn't taken in that it was you who was reposting, ( 2 ) had noticed that Carthian was a rather neat anagram and assumed it was a variant of carthaginian that I hadn't previously come across. As I have only the sketchiest of knowledge about Spartacus I should either have taken a bit more trouble or left it to quizmonkey to repeat his(?) suggestion.

I hope it wasn't taken as a rebuke, it was meant as advice. It's just that if I'm not sure of an answer, I Google, and if I'm still unsure I use a question mark. It prevents people being misinformed.
