Famous within this Scottish burgh,
A great designer once lived here,
Worldly seas was the 'star' of his plans
On the esplanade his monument stands.

I would also appreciate an explanation of the answer!

Good luck
I don't know the answer to your question, but if , say, you started with scottish towns that have esplanades...go to www.royalmail.com, then go to 'postcode finder' and type esplanade into the street name, and they will then list all the (scottish) towns with an esplanade.
They are: Aberdeen, Ayr, Greenock, Kirkcaldy, Lerwick & Stirling.
I would suggest you then put a combination like: Ayr, esplanade, monuments into google and see what comes up.
Good luck!
There are a few clues now in People & Places.
