8d) Horizontal barS .....

the answer seems to be andiron ....

according to chambers 'andiron' is a noun ...... a decorated iron bar, usually one of a pair, for supporting logs and coal in a big fireplace.

I thought Mepham had made another bou-bou, but JimJools says that an andiron can consist of several bars, and he's usually right. Damn it.
Er well I have looked at a few dictionaries and all have andiron as a singular bar. It would not be a general knowledge crosssword from Michael if there was not a slight mistake with his 'plurals'. Not that it concerns me at all - enjoy the crossword too much for that.

Does JimJools have a reference that states this?

The clue refers to firedogS .... which is a plural.

According to Chambers ... Firedog is an Andiron ... i.e. both singular.

Everything in the clue is Plural including the logs ....

Sure the answer is Andiron .... because it fits!!

(Tong / Tongs lasy week ..... some ABer stated Tongs was correct ... later Mepham admitted the mistake!)

Does the following help? You will note it states "bar or bars."
