Carap is a tree - one = A - mr elderly not sure of the rest!!

CARAP is correct for 14D left...at least it is in my grid! The 4-letter word that opens with a 'c' and ends in 'rap' means broken/worthless...ie the 'US' stands for 'unserviceable'. As you say, put 'a' in there. for 'carap'. That's how I read it at least.

Thanks quizmonster, our posting has brought in many options. Mr elderly has now finished and has asked me to thank everyone who helps him. I wish he would use the computer and ask questions for himself but I seem to have made quite a few helpful friends in my postings for him

The way I read it was GUM is old US slang for nonsense, humbug, and another word for that is, as QM says, a 4 letter word beginning with C and ending in RAP
Once again, Pld, we seem to have got to the same point by somewhat different routes! All-in-all - once again - I think your suggestion is the better, You see, I didn't check and just assumed the carap was a gum-tree!
