before proprietary perfumes women would gather lavendar and infuse in water and use as a scent...I think thats what the old perfume mean...but I could be wrong
I think you're probably right (lavendEr incidentally) but with such a vague question (and no letter numbers) the setters surely can't refuse the other 'valid' suggestions?

Quizmonkey - All of these questions have been asked before. The previous questions gave the number of letters. So lavender water fits. Otherwise would agree that any of the other answers could be right.
