Sarumite, it's in Chambers ( I don't use anything else! ) as a variant spelling of tuart.
Have you done 8d.? I don't entirely understand the clue so consequently don't know what the last letter should be...ostracod + a / e / s ? Otherwise I'm sorted.

Afraid I'm unable to help on 8d as I don't have this crossword, but Ostracoda is the subclass to which Ostracod belong. (not sure if that will be of any assistance).
Thank you very much Quizmonster. Can't think why I couldn't see ( literally ) that....ostrakon is 2 below & ostracise is 1 above ostracod in Chambers. Ah well! I'd got myself obsessed with orts - fragments, though not of pottery.
