Definitely a rifle .. Rifles identified as a �yager� traditionally were hunting rifles of Germanic style. German spelling J�ger.
The term also means a huntsman or rifleman.

earthakitten - shaneystar seems sure, and that's good enough for me! It's just that I've never come across that usage before in spite of having lived in Germany on and off for about 25 years. Still, if you found it on a list of unusual words I probably wouldn't expect to be familiar with it. (would someone - shaneystar ? - tell me how to do umlauts)
