Can you help with a couple. Don't want the answers, justs clues to point me in the right direction.

The first one is 45. Ban sailor from club. Am I looking for a word meaning Ban and another meaning sailor? I want to put Checkmate, but that isn't a game. The other one is 52. Mr Turnbull sought verification of his prophecies that it would be an evil game. Is Mr. T. the one in a Trollope novel? If so is the answer the name of another character in that book who has a name half of which is a game? If I am right, then what has the other half of his name got to do with the clue? If I am wrong, any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.
