4d French Bread (4) E?R? ......... I thought perhaps Euro, but if so surely it would read continental bread or similar, or maybe the answer is something completely different?? Any thoughts most welcome .......

Yes, I fully appreciate that geo0939, but the point I was making above is why French??
Why not? It could have been any number of countries where the Euro is the currency. I suppose France was a random choice.
I bet the setter of this crossword is a real "pain":-)

we don't pop into the baker's shop to get some Dutch bread or some Spanish bread but we would go in for some French bread (or "pain" thank you geo0939!!) - it's just a recognisable phrase. Hope I don't sound crusty!! :o)
