No best answer has yet been selected by roey. Once a best answer has been selected, it will be shown here.
For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.roey As a general rule, when you ask a question on AB , it would help if you declare the number of letters in the solution and any letters you have (or think you have)!
Do not assume that everyone has a copy of the grid - as it is clear that only one of us had that advantage. The rest of us were solving the clue completely blind.
Chambers defines "penicillin" as "a group of substances that stop ... bacteria, extracted from moulds ..."
Under "antibiotic" it has "a substance produced by micro-organisms which, in dilute solution, has the capacity ..."
The clue which you posed (in the absence of all the possible hints you could have given) fits "penicillin" slightly better than the correct option!
In other words - Please help US to help YOU.

Crofter ..as you very kindly sum up our link words for us do you not actually do the DTGK on Saturday ? I think we are at crossed purposes here .Or is this another Mepham Muddle ?
Has he got his penicillin muddled up with his antibiotics ...Good Lord I shall have to take an aspirin in a minute !! :)

Both ShamrockBlue and (latterly) Sarumite do the DTGK Crossword and they launch the Herculis AB site. I don't see the link words until they are posted by others.
I spend about two hours monitoring the entries to the site, another two hours with the Sunday night summary and two hours on Monday morning compiling the "Results". At no point do I actuallty see a copy of the DT.
Had it been declared that the solution started with A_T_ etc
then we all could have saved time. That's the point I'm making.

It was clear to me that ShamrockBlue was on a winner - a fun game that a growing number of ABers were enjoying. I suggested a light-hearted League Table being constructed that could help to build momentum over the month.
Since I proposed it, it seemed only fair that I should put in the hours - in a way to repay AB for the pleasure it brings to many (including myself).
I sometimes do the Times and /or Guardian Crosswords, but nothing on a regular basis. All my efforts on AB are therefore "blind", which perhaps explains the reason for my appeal to roey for more detail.
