I can't conjure up an answer, but I wonder if the answer to 8 is ????POOL i.e. almost Poole, the answer to 2. Not sure whether it's meant to be multiple or multiply

actually Muffet, I have seriously wondered whether LynneEmb has made a mistake with the number of letters as there have been a few other mistakes - but hey-ho!! :O)

Sorry, Dustybun. I'm surprised, though. in view of all the sensivity. I suppose it's historic.

Coming back to 8 though, LynneEmb, I wonder whether the answer is ????POOL, = multiple (or multiply?) followed 'almost' by Poole, the answer to 2. Fishpool and Ullapool hardly seem to fit. Just a thought.

the 'British Isles' is a geographical fact. 'Great Britain' does not include the Republic of Ireland. :o(

Geographical place names can change, and are not written in stone.
There will probably be a shift away in the next few decades whenever an acceptable alternative can be decided. As it says in the Wikipedia article , at least one Atlas has already done so.
