2. The Farmer's Wife (she cut off their tails in Three Blind Mice).
Question Author
How do you do it???
I only posted this a few minutes ago and you've come up with a brilliant answer.
thank you -I'd never have got this.
Thank you, shoemad. I have a devious mind and it was the de-tailed which gave me a clue. I have not got the other one yet.
Shoemad, do you have answers to
Q30. Kind of chain on bird made by confused Mia Lane (11.5)
Q89. Dress for the garden (5,6)
Q91. Effeminate, he made fuss noisily with Rolling Stone. (8)
Help appreciated
-- answer removed --
Shoemad, forgot to give you answer to Q83. CIRCE (circle without the L)
30. Christopher Robin anag Mia Lane = A A Milne
91. Sisyphus - King of Corinth who was condemned to roll an enormous stone up to the top of a hill, and of course as soon as it gat there it rolled down.

I'm not doing this quiz but don't believe the answer to 83 can be Circe - (a) we need a plural answer (b) I don't think she was a shepherdess - she was a sorceress and (after she'd turned Jason & his crew into swine) a swineherdess, and most important ! (c) the combined clue & answer are inconsistent with the wit and ingenuity of the other clues shown here.

burgess, thank you for your answer.
I'd help you with your questions if I could but have been given these to find by someone else and yours weren't mentioned.
why don't you put them as a separate post and hopefully some of these helpful bright sparks will solve them?
Merry christmas to you and everyone else.

Question Author
oops - I am stupid. Wrote clue down incorrectly. Sorry!
It's not 'sheperdesses', it is 'shepherdess' so not plural.
However, you're right about Circe being a sorceress so maybe I'm looking for another answer?
Shoemad, I think Circe would be a most unsatisfactory answer. Apart from the other objections I've made to it, 'courtly' is unexplained. And if it's correct it simply isn't up to the standard of the other clues shown on this post.

89. Dolly Varden ?
shoemad, one I still have a ? against is Q38. Dickensian who expected a niece rather than a nephew. I have Betsey Trotwood, is this your answer?
Question Author
Sorry, have been out Christmas shopping!
Betsey Trotwood sounds a reasonable answer although haven't actually done rest of the quiz. I was just asked to help with the two above by someone else. sorry
I still need Q83. courtly shepherdess on the cicle but no line.
Q89. dress for the garden
Kettledrum, are you still there, we are still looking for Q83 on the literary characters quiz "Courtly shepherdess on the Circle-but no line". could it be Tempe. Temple on the Cicle line where courts of justice can be found, remove line "L", this still doesn't explain Shepherdess however. Any thoughts?
Burgess - I'm still here but at the moment have no ideas as to how we can find a shepherdess connection to Tempe. But I do like your idea of Temple being on the circle line and Inner & Middle Temples being 2 of the Inns of Court. Will work on it.
You are/were looking for a shepherdess and Phoebe, as you know, is a shepherdess in 'As You Like it.'
But, if you are tying this shepherdess in with your London underground (that's the circle line you're referring to, I presume?) Well, I know nothing about your subway system. Just thought I'd mendtion Phoebe.
Ont-ice. We are looking for a 5-lettered shepherdess.
Those I can think of are:
Chloe (Daphnis & Chloe)
Phebe )
Celia (disguised as) ) AYLI
Mopsa - Winter's Tale

Beyond being shepherdesses I can see no further connection to the clue (circles, courts, lines)
Okay. Didn't notice that it was 5 letters, but thought I'd try to give a hand. As I said I can't tie anything into your subway 'cos I don't know the 'lines' et al.
I'll toss the shepherdess back to you and wish you luck.
Thanks, ont-ice. I don't think it said anywhere on this thread that it was 5 letters - so you couldn't possibly be expected to know.! If you have any further inspiration we'd love to hear from you.
shoemad, i think its Phebe which is Phoebe minus the o and o is a circle!!
do you have 56 completed?
