in maths, a ^ means 'raised to the power of' such as 2^3 = two cubed.

As a diacritical mark it is a circumflex and usually means the dropping of the letter S.

It can also be used in grammar correction as a sign of omission.

The symbol ^ is called a caret.

Caret for ^
Hi GG ... Can't help with 45 surprise surprise

I don't know what the symbol means but epi means on / upon etc. xx

Thank you gen2, Ont-ice and earthakitten. Knowing what the symbol is hasn't really helped but thankyou for you speedy replies.

Thank you earthakitten - I would normally plump for a clue but as time is running out.............. the answer would be great x
Hi again ... the answer suggested was
Way upon the chimney top ???
If the symbol means caret (carrot ? ) I wonder now if it's right. Oh dear, running out of time to decide aren't we. xx
someone suggested epi was mince pie and ^ was carrot. You have to make up the rest yourself

Thanks earthakitten & rbind - I think that it is a case of tossing a coin.
sorry to go off at a tangent - but was this the quiz that had the "ebony" dingbat? If so, did anyone ever solve it? Pretty please?!! :O)
Dustybun ... yes, this is the Ebony one but no one either knows or is divulging that one. If anyone has it I think it will be the clincher ... sadly, as we speak, it is not I xx
thanks earthakitten. I do hope that when the quiz is over and done, and the answers are announced, some kind person will post the ebony one on AB. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has acquired a few bald patches because of that one!!!
the other thing that occurs to me about the flue and epi one is that there is a custom somewhere of leaving a mince pie for santa and a carrot for the reindeer - could it be fuel (anag) for the reindeer? Yes, I'm wittering again!! :O)
