Sorry still trying to find this out myself.
Ashmolean archives (AM 28 sections 7-10) have details of payments to firewatchers in 1944 -- if only they could be accessed.
just a guess but might it have been allan gwynne-jones?
Have just found a reference to Eduardo Paolozzi sleeping in the Ashmolean and being paid to firewatch .
Computer on a go-slow at moment , so will do cross referencing later.
Question Author
Thanks for these suggestions. I have just consulted Kyffin Williams' autobiography and in it he states that he didn't do any firewatching, but joined the Home Guard instead. So the mystery deepens...
in that case, the answer must be captain mainwaring
Jomes...Was that book entitled 'Across the Straits' ? it being the 1st autobiog by K. Williams...
I've heard all these names associated with Williams at the Slade ( when it was moved to Oxford from London during WW2)
I need help with this question, too ! It being the LAST ONE in order to finish this particular quiz ! Grrrr !
Cheers
After Anthony Green took the trouble to reply to my e-mail,
"Who firewatched"
I can say with some certainty, Eduardo Paolozzi.
Kyffin Williams recounted this story to him.
Hooray!
Sorry , tautau --should have said thank you for taking the trouble to find this out and post it !
