Thanks slaney, you put me in the right direction
I'm not sure whether we are supposed to take this question seriously because, if we are, there is no simple answer.
Even Chambers can't decide so gives two ideas. a) a small rowing, sailing or motor vessel or b) loosely, a ship.
Certainly, the crew of an Aircraft Carrier will frequently refer to "our boat", while the order "boats away" refers to small boats.
But I guess that's not much help!
Could it be a Capital Ship?
Loosely, yes.
In the area of public rights of way, a B.O.A.T. is a Byway Open To All Traffic.
