Is it just me, or does the answer to 31 rely on a definition that isn't in Chambers 2003? Perhaps it's in Chambers 2006, which I haven't yet invested in. (It's in Collins 1986)

Also, it seems a bit careless that the clue to 35 should contain the answer to 34, and the clue to 1 the answer to 8.

pldcav I don't have Azed so answer is unknown to me, but if it's of interest, I will check in Chambers 10th Edition to confirm inclusion or otherwise.

Thanks for your offer - the answer is TRADE ON and the definition is EXPLOIT
You're right, of course, Pld, that Chambers 2003 does not list 'trade on', but it has been a phrase in common use for well over a hundred years, as in "She traded on her beauty for years"...ie exploited it.
All the 'instructions' say is that Chambers is recommended, after all.
Re the cross-referencing, I found it quite amusing myself!
"Trade On" is also not listed in the current 2006 edition of Chambers.

Thank you both
Chambers 2003 does contain the definition of 'trade on' right at the very end of the 'trade' section just before tradescantia. It's there as a phrase (as indicated by the symbol just before Board of Trade).
trade on = to count on or take advantage of esp unsrupulously.

Well spotted! So it was just me and my ageing eyes after all!
