Joe Maplin made no physical appearance in the TV series, but was engaged only in telephone conversations with various camp employees. He was always said to be away 'visiting the other camp at Camber Sands'. It was rumoured that the voice heard on the phone purporting to be Joe Maplin, was in fact, the voice of co-writer Jimmy Perry. As stated above, the part was declined by Bob Momkhouse, and nver re-cast. There were also film versions of Hi-de-Hi, but whether the character of Joe Maplin was represented, I don't know.
