Good Morning. This is rogerr (Barbara). I have set the link words today
and will continue to do so throughout the month of February. The four words to
have their links predicted should appear below at 9.00am and you are invited to
predict the missing links, whilst I "Test your Mettle".

Most of you know the rules better than I, but recall that I have followed the
same rule as crofter on word length. Each of my chosen link words
contains at least four letters and at most eight letters. Stray outside this
range and you will be wasting one of your attempts!

The competition will officially close on Sunday Evening at 7.00pm when
crofter will declare my selected words and then apply the same rules of
awarding points that have been applied during January.

Crofter...do you ever sleep?
Pauline x
Madam Pauline
I think it is time you were in your bed.
Mr. O
I'm just off now! Consider myself told!
Was just catching up on some reading...goodnight!
Crofter and Pauline you have both probably gone to bed now but as I can't sleep just wanted to thank you both for being so welcoming and helpful this week. I can only improve with this computer.

How about that Pauline, you taught me that today so next week i can do a proper list!!! Thanks again and goodnight Evsajo.p.s. Pauline I remember I left you a message when you had your sad day (hope i've got the right person)
Gold finger
Silver plate
copper kettle
iron filings
Congratulations evsajo ! I well remember how mystifying all the basic moves were on the computer - and I still have a very limited repertoire.
Hello rogerr
I would love to join in with the other link words fun but as I live abroad and a member of the Crossword Society the Herculis crossword isn't available nor the Saturday general knowledge. Does anyone know why?
didn't you read my post last week evsajo about the broken arrow key? :O(

Bangor --you don't need to have the crosswords to take part. The links are posted by the first person to do the Xword, we guess what the linkwords will be and the first person to complete Monday's Xword posts the answers.
Steff then posts how we did (usually very badly).
I can't answer the other part of your question as I don't know.
If no one else answers you on here, I suggest you post on Q&P main page.
Regards
Barbara
PS I meant that we usually do badly--not Steffs post!!!
Thanks rogerr. Will look out for it tomorrow.
I didn't realise that both husband and wife could have a go, I will have to see if Jim wants to have a go at predicting the links.
Here are Jim's Predictions then

Gold - LEAF
Silver - WEDDING
Copper - BEECH
FLAT - Iron

I hope they haven't duplicated anyone else as I haven't checked.
Hi..only just logged on today!
evsajo...brilliant! You will do more each time with practice. Yes I am the same Pauline...and I remember your message well. Thanks..take care! Pauline x

Dustybun...when I was so new to the computer I don't know If I would have known even what a broken arrow key was!!!
I saw your post, and after evsajo was still struggling, I thought to just say the key 3rd to the right of the L might be easier!..or maybe she didn't see your post. Kind Regards Pauline x
Pairs of entries from couples are becoming more common. For scoring purposes make sure that which is which is clearly marked.

On a different but vaguely related problem, when two ABers submit the same 4 choices, there is no problem unless they both score 4 correct hits. The first entrant scores all 6 points (including a bonus of 2 points) but what about second one? If they were within 2 minutes then they also get 6 points. If they weren't, the second person has to change one of their choices (theoretically) and therefore will only score 3 points.

The rule set out above is to stop some one holding back until thyey see the entry of a player more skilled than they and then copying their four choices word for word!

that's ok Pauline - I just love to play the wounded soldier from time to time!!! Anyway, you did explain it far better than wot I did! (See - I'm the black sheep from a family of teachers!!) Best wishes, Dee xx :O)
now I'm confused crofter - surely there's no skill involved - just luck? :O)

Dustybun--It's called skill when you win--luck if you don't!!
;0) B
Ah Dustybun,

Let me first say that on Friday Night I took part in Pub Quiz to clear my mind of anything to do with . During a round on TV from the past, we were asked, Which programme featured "Dustybun"! (instead of Dustybin). I uttered the words of that eternal TV pessimist "I don't belieeeeeve it!"

I am sure that there is a big element of luck in the link games - but what if the same people keep on rising to the top week in week out? Spooky thought - but only time will tell. If there is a skill factor in play, then our tables of players will find it!
Bangor, Like you I live abroad and belong to the crossword society. I don't know why they don't put in the GK and Herculis but it is annoying. Perhaps we and any other ABers in the same position need to bombard the Telegraph with requests for their inclusion.
It's so good to have the links provided so we can join in with these home[grown comps.
Good luck
