1. Harvest home (6) - word should start with 'H'.

2. Grass found growing with wheat (5) - starts with a 'C',
(I can only find 'couch' grass, but can't link this to any sport or game?)

Can anyone help please - many thanks.

1. Hockey
2 - surprisingly is chess. From OneLook:-

Quick definitions (chess)

noun: a game for two players who move their 16 pieces according to specific rules; the object is to checkmate the opponent's king
noun: weedy annual native to Europe but widely distributed as a weed especially in wheat
Cheat - a card game where cheating is allowed !
& a weed ( grass ?) that is frequently found growing side by side with wheat.
Thank you logogriph for that information. I've now looked it up in Chambers.
Chess ( 3rd definition): US - a type of grass found growing with wheat.

Cheat -another name for chess (3)

I willingly concede that chess is a better answer for the game.

Thank you both for your help on these questions.

kettledrum - can you explain why the answer is hockey?

Thanks again.
Nothing like Chambers for providing a decent slice of ambiguity :-)

I still think 'cheat' is more fun to play (even though I used to play an awful lot of chess)!
According to Chambers hockey is a dialect word meaning:
harvest home or the harvest supper.
Miss Boots - I notice that you do quite a lot of quizzes / puzzles. You really ought to put Chambers or your wish list for your next birthday! It's invaluable.

Thanks alot kettledrum for your answer and advice, and guess what - it's my birthday's this month!! - I'm actually hoping for a pink sapphire and diamond ring rather than a dictionary (but if I knew all the answers I wouldn't get to chat to nice people like you on answerbank - would I!)
Well, I agree that if the choice is either a pink sapphire & diamond ring or a dictionary, I think I'd go for the ring too! Perhaps some other nice person will give you the dictionary.
