4d. Bonco or Bunko?
29a. Wide-brimmed medieval steel helmets, also called kettle hats (7-2-3) Chapeaux de fer? Too many letters. Even if singular, still does not fit with 18d. (I have luteous).

Chapels de fer
4d Bunco

29a Chapels de fer
Do they allow alt spellings do you think ....!
I don't know shaneystar .. Chambers gives both but indicates under bunco .. see bunko. So your Bunko is probably better! ;0)

Thanks, SS2 and sarumite. Bunc/ko looks like six and doz - I'm not familiar with this puzzle - do you often got alternative spellings, la MM?
Aquagility ... I think Shaney's 'Bunko' is preferable .. now that I've looked more closely at Chambers.
Both definitions fit the clue ..so I think they have to allow for alt spellings ..but you would think they would put that if they have sourced the crossword correctly .
Also..I have just looked at my Chambers and am inclined to go with Bunko ...as they just say "See Bunko " when looking at Bunco and it is a definition ..so I think you have go to with a definition rather than a "see" .
Which will teach me NOT to rely on Dictionary .com...!
Shaney .. I agreed that your bunko was preferable owing to Chambers layout, in my post at 2208 !!
best wishes ;0)
