And I always thought 'struthious' meant utterly unbelievable!
Sorry if I've Aquagility's ruffled feathers.

I would defend myself as follows:

0. I'm 'coming from' the perspective that children also
do the dtgk xword, and get discouraged if too many
answers are too difficult.

1. As in previous weeks, I have learnt some new words today thanks to KM, struthious most notably. Note that not everyone has access to the internet to help them.

2. The banter to which you refer is exactly what is going between us right now. It's fun!

3. Those who find the xword too easy should ban themselves from using this website and search engines such as Google (not to mention reference books), then
try to fill in ALL the squares correctly, as in true exam conditions. It's not so easy then.
Just a quick PS to my own 2 messages.
Having re-read both, my dyslexia becomes ever more apparent (and public).
And my spelling!
Let's call it a draw.
I for one have enjoyed today's for a change - slightly less challenging but interesting to be able to recall the facts more or less for myself without recourse to books or Google and as such very satisfying to know I did it. That doesn't mean that sometimes I don't like a bit more of a hunt for the answers and I don't look on here until I have exhausted all other possibilities. It's nice to have a variety of levels from week to week.

Keep up the good work KM!
No, Please No, I have just started, with your help, to be able to finish the darn thing!

Struth (or strewth) is a shortened version of the oath "God's truth", but I do like your suggestion as to its possible origination.

having just spotted a comment by skeletim ... since when was this xword ever intended for children? it wasn't and isn't. if some like to try it, then fine. but this was alwaysa a xword for adults. long may it stay that way.
Well, I loved it this week - and I'm not finished yet. Yes, it's the easiest to date, but there are nine that I had to look up - which is work and time - and it's thrilling to get them from one's general knowledge - sometimes after a little thought and informed guesswork. As somebody said last week, it IS a General Knowledge quiz, after all, and I think Kate is meeting that brief. I guess you're all unusually knowledgeable and clever and able to retain facts and/ or have oodles of spare time!!
I can't believe Skeletim is suggesting the crossword be kept dummed down for "children" who might like to do it. There are plenty of puzzles around for kids to do. This is an adult crossword and as such should present a challenge to keep the old grey cells alert and stave off the alzheimers.

I agree this was really too easy this week. I only had to look up one answer and that was only to confirm that I h ad got it right having never listened to Eva Cassidy.

Hello there, You may not all read this as it's now sunday night! It's been a while since I was on AB - Just thought I was getting good at the GK! Fat chance. And for the message above.... Struth, comes from God's Truth. I should know - I get called it all the time!

Here we are on Monday morning and <bu>it's getting worse</bu>. There is not a single word in today's Herculis which is in any way unusual. I'm no intellectual snob, but I found it really boring.

No Elspeth struthious is greek and latin in origin whereas strewth is a corruption of 'God's truth' ot so I have always believed.
Yes, Aquagility, I agree with you, and other posts. That was certainly much easier than I'd have expected for a Herculis. I also thought that the links were 'less than challenging'. There's usually at least one that causes a 'groan' but today's were very 'run of the mill'. Here's hoping.........
Elspeth,
'Struth' or sometimes 'strewth', I've always believed was an abbreviation for the expletive, 'God's truth'. I don't think it's exclusively Australian, though we know they've got a whole bunch of them that are:D.
Have had problems with my computer over the the last few days so was unable to partake in the Links game or anything else . Having just been defraggled I was reading through and found this .
Yes ..it was fairly easy but let's give the lass a chance.I have every admiration for her taking up the reins .
I wonder if any of us could do any better ... I doubt it .
As for sending her emails to make it more "challenging " .....It can't have been easy for her....she lost her father only about three months ago . Criticism is the last thing she needs right now I would think .He's a very hard act to follow. Everyone has to learn to walk before they can run.
I agree with the direction of comments by Skeletim and shaneystar2.

Why are ABers so judgemental about this GK Crossword?

If you don't like it .... go and find another one to do ..... where are the pious comment about other puzzles on this Site .... or are they all perfect?

MM Associates has a contract with DT to provide GK and Herculis puzzles KM has assumed the leading role .... perhaps, it's the DT putting pressure on for the style of crossword(s) that they want in their newspaper .... who knows, but

cut out the pomposity and lay off KM ....
Pomposity? Having re-read this thread I can see only one example.
Just to let you all know KM does visit this site and is very appreciative of all your comments good and bad. Cruciverbalism can be a tricky proffesion at times (you can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time).
