EV No. 745 The finishing touches
7 Answers
Having completed this grid from two weeks ago, there is just one clue that I was not 100% happy with.
Can anyone out there nail this for me?
1A [40] Glitter is getting on - about 50, not 70 (5)
I went for BLATE and argued as follows:
"getting on" = FARE about 50 = FLARE (Glitter)
Points score is 42.
Change word to BLATE to make a points score of 40.
QUESTION: What is the relevance of the 70 in the clue?

I thought of GLARY at first (just like you did) but I am sure that that part of the answer is FLARE.
On the basis that A = 1, B = 2, etc FLARE scores 42.
The [40] in the question means I have to modify the answer to get a similar word with the score of 40 (exactly). Using the word BLATE gets the correct score, but why has the setter mentioned 70 in the clue? That's my question!
By the way, welcome to AB where most of the clues are much easier than that!

I got hooked on the EV two weeks ago from an AB posting. It appears in the Sunday Telegraph and has been described as Britain's most difficult crossword! I managed to get my first one solved, but it was hard going.

Note that after a walk this afternoon, I called in to my local papershop to change my usual order to incude the ST in future. Thus is the attraction of EV.
