The Times online leaves me with a bit that canonly be soved by trial and error. Today it was some of the odd nos., including 1/5 in the middle square. One way round led to contradictions, but how else can I resolve it

Have you still got your workings?
I put the 6s in early on and got to the stage where I had all the even numbers in place, and, if you call the squares
ABC
DEF
GHI
then I had all of squares A&D, just the 3&7 to find in G, and the 1&5 in E, various other odd numbers needed.
I couldn't get any further without trial and error, when one arrangement in E gave a contradiction.
But the instructions say you should do it without trial and error, I often can't with the Superiors, so I wondered what trick I was missing.
