3 d. Sudatory . TO enclosed by sudary , another word for veronica or sweat cloth after St . Veronica .
4 d . Ayrshire . A year's hire .

Thanks everyone. I would never have got sudatory! Still need 3 to finish. Heard fire - it drops a man. c -u - -. Start to sell fruit, and some asparagus. s - - - t. A local politician has eccentric attire. a - c - r- r -. Does anyone have any ideas?
Asparagus spear may mean incorrect letters elsewhere .
Chute .
Question Author
Yes, Swannbaker, I agree it ought to be spear but if it is then sudatory is wrong which seems unlikely. The s and the d fit with other words but it also provides the first r in the clue about the eccentric attire. Without that first r it would be much easier to find a word to fit the letters a - c - - - r -. I think I may have to give up on this one. Thanks anyway.
A C(ounty) C(ouncillor) with outre gives you attire . Spear must be OK .
Roman bathhouse ( SUDATORIUM ) had ( TO ) shut out leaving Veronica or sweat cloth ( SUDARIUM ) . Phew .
