I thought 'timetable' but have 'newsman' for 2D the clue being Four points to male reporter.

I really am making a mess of this top corner. If I put CONTABLE which is obviously correct then I am left with - for 1D. c?u?h as the letters for clue 'Right out of squat sofa.'
If the answer is COUCH - and probably is - can you explain why?
