Think it can only be SMOCK, to fit STOOK and KIDNEYetc, but am not putting that in yet - there are better brains out there to confirm!
Question Author
I had thought perhaps smock, but so far unable to find any confirmation of it. Will keep looking .. but many thanks for suggestion gardenknowin.
Question Author
Have found confirmation at last .. it was called a "Smock Race". ;0)
just to confuse the issue, gardenknowin, 24d could be STOOK or SHOCK. Either way I think SMOCK is right for 28a.. but not yet confirmed
Great stuff oh, knowing-one ! Chambers Wordgames gives 11 that fit but only 3 were likely I reckon, and didn't think it would be stook again. Race you to the post-box!
Question Author
Thanks marathon man, I have now been able to confirm it as follows, and 24d could also possibly be Shook, so there are 3 options!

Hi marathon-man. Agree with Shock of sheaves now as can't see anything that would "pair" with stook on Monday (unless it's MIstook!)
Thanks gardenknowin... now about that race to the post-box!

First in the post-box will be at the bottom of the bag!
A smock race was a race by women for the prize of a smock
Hi Sarumite!

The answer is SMOCK.
See Wikipedia "Cotswold Games" for more info.
