A towel is highlighted in the Guide, but I've always thought that the essential item ("essential tome" in some reviews) is the book itself. Without rereading the book....

Update... According to the BBC website, a twoel is the essentuial thing carried by all hitchhikers. Who m I to argue with the Beeb!
