What Royal Navy rank is indicated by a single stripe surmounted by a small loop on the jacket cuffs?

Further to the answer given by paddywak I think a Commodore also wears a single stripe surmounted by a small loop

It's sub-lieutenant; a Commodore's stripe is much thicker. The Navy know the loop as the executive curl...
