Could you explain how LAYLOW fits Kept quiet in retreat? I thought Hadlow was a winner. If Lay = kept and Low = quiet, where exactly does 'retreat' fit in. All I can find for Laylow as one word is a song by cirKus.

Apologies for not coming back sooner.

Lie low....'to keep quiet or hidden.. to retreat'

Lay = past tense of lie

Clue should have been (3.3) not (6)

Thank you, and apologies for my Freudian slip, defeat, not retreat.
