Otosteon is eight letters.

Testern, a sixpenny piece, fits - but I can not see how it fits the clue.

The only doubtful letter is the "T", which comes from palmchaT, the clue being:

Bushy old wig may hold a cuckoo (8) ?A?M?H??

The cuckoo is a member of the Cuculidae family whereas the Palmchat is the sole member of the family Dulidae.

palmchat looks ok to me so the T must be right

Dalmahoy is a simple anagram of "may hold a", indicated by cuckoo. How bird-brained of me!

But how does Yestern fit the bill?

I thought tern (trio/set of three) on yest (last) and yestern is a 'provincial' word.

Not very convincing of me and there is an extra T. Let me think about it -I'm almost there!
