Is the date right, could it be 1981?
The charter of 1781 stated that the bank had to carry enough gold to pay it's notes demand.
Sorry! ON demand.
I'm wondering if I explained this properly. I think the answer is Gold. In 1781, if a customer handed over a banknote the bank had to able to issue gold in it's place. This charter lasted until 1794, when the war created a gold shortage.
