One possible answer...they were in the Southern Hemisphere, which would mean their summer is our winter....

Well just because she was ten on the 25th December, it doesn't state that it was her birthday on that day. She would also have been ten on the 24th Dec., 24th November and any date you care to mention after she was ten in the summer.
