If the extra �6.80 leaves 1/3 the original change then �6.80 must be equal to 2/3 the original change. That, in turn. means it must have been �10.20 change and the item cost �39.80.

To check,

�50-�39.80 = �10.20

�50-�39.80-�6.80 = �3,40 (which is 1/3 �10.20)
