am stuck on, 21 down,
easy clue - open country, cryptic clue - open country that's said to exert - 5 letters, have w?a?d,
can only think of weald ? but what's that got to do with the clue??
any help greatly appreciated.

Yes .. Weald = open country ... sounds like wield (exert)

thank you sarumite, can't believe i've actually done both these cryptics this week (first time ever!!!) and only had to ask for one question, you are right, you, teacher1, k, told me ages ago to keep trying and they do get easier :-) thanks again.
