Richard Whitely was the first man to appear in Countdown so I presume Carol Vorderman must have been the first woman.

Accuracy would point to Kathy Hytner being the original co-host of Countdown. Carol V came later

The original hostesses were Kathy Hytner and Beverley Isherwood, who used to select the letters and numbers cards respectively. Either Linda Barrett or Carol Vorderman was wheeled on twice a show (they did alternate programmes) to check the calculations for the numbers game. Carol Vorderman now does all these jobs
